This lovely large 2 bedroom cottage is situated in
the the very heart of medieval Rye. It is a 14th Century
Wealden Hall house (with later 16th century
additions!) There is a wealth of original timbers throughout the house
culminating in the high beamed vaulted ceiling in the upstairs lounge
area. This vaulted ceiling would once have once been open to the ground
floor where fires were made in the centre of the room and the smoke was
left to rise through an open hole in the roof! Fortunately, heating and
cooking has moved on in the
last 600 years and despite its age Hall House is very well insulated and
has a very efficient modern heating system to make your stay comfortable
whatever time of year you
come. There is a large kitchen, utility room, a lounge area on both
floors, a dining area,2 ensuite bedrooms, downstairs cloakroom and even
2 staircases! The front door opens into the
dining area featuring an
impressive old inglenook fireplace. To the right of this is the first
lounge area which includes the bed
settee for 5th /6th guest. Also off the dining
area is the door to the kitchen and utility room. This large kitchen is
very well equipped and includes a fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher
and ceramic induction stove with double oven. There’s even a waste
disposal unit! There is a washing machine in the utility room off the
kitchen and also the fist steep staircase leading up to the
second lounge and 2 bedrooms. Also off the dining area is a
door to the downstairs cloakroom and the second steep staircase
which leads directly into the master bedroom. The top of the fist staircase
leads into the second lounge which has the wonderful original beamed
vaulted ceiling. This room has 2 comfortable sofas, a television, DVD
player and free to air satellite television. Both the bedrooms are off
this room (although as mentioned before the master bedroom can also be
accessed from the 2nd staircase off the ground floor dining
area. The master bedroom has a double bed, bedside cabinets and a
wardrobe. Off this room is a lovely en-suite bathroom with a bath,
handheld shower, designer sink and toilet. The second bedroom also has a
double bed, bedside cabinets
and a wardrobe. Off this room is a large shower room with a
multi-jet shower, sink and toilet.
Although there is no garden you have the ‘Rye Salts’ a large
open area of grass around the corner and down
a flight of steps or alternatively you could walk up the road and
relax in the grounds of St Mary’s Church. It is surrounded by a
wonderful mixture of period houses known as Church Square. Beyond this
there are a number of wonderful walks that you can start on your
doorstep as Rye is surrounded by countryside and is also very close to
the Sussex coast. ![]() Lounge Two |
